AI Tools for Content Gap Analysis in SEO: Find What You Are Missing Before Competitors Do
Find where competitors are getting cited and you are not, before they widen the lead.
Content gap analysis used to mean: find keywords your competitors rank for that you do not. That is still useful. But in the AI search era, there is a second, more important gap to find: the topics where competitors are being cited by AI engines and you are not.
These two gap types often overlap, but not always. A competitor might rank poorly in blue links while being frequently cited by Perplexity. Your highest-ranking pages might have low AI citation rates. Finding both types of gaps requires different tools used in the right sequence.
This guide covers the tools that find both — with emphasis on the AI citation gap that most SEO teams are not yet measuring.
What AI citation gap analysis finds that keyword gap analysis misses
Standard keyword gap analysis compares ranking positions. It answers: “Competitor X ranks for these 200 keywords I do not.” This is useful for ranking strategy but incomplete for AI SEO.
AI citation gap analysis answers: “Competitor X is cited as a source in AI answers for these queries where I am absent.” This is the more important signal because:
- A competitor ranked third can be cited in 80% of AI answers on a topic if their content is structured well
- A page you rank first for may have zero AI citations if its format is not AI-friendly
- Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google AI Overviews have different citation patterns than Google’s ranking algorithm
You need both gap types. The tools below cover both, with notes on which aspect each handles best.
SemRush Keyword Gap + AI Toolkit
SemRush’s Keyword Gap tool is the standard for competitive keyword analysis. Run it against your top two to three competitors, filter for keywords with high search volume and question intent, and you have the classical content gap list.
Overlay this with SemRush’s AI Overview tracking data from Position Tracking to identify which gaps in the keyword list also have AI Overview features. Gaps where (a) a competitor outranks you and (b) AI Overviews are present represent the highest-priority content opportunities — fixing them improves both traditional ranking and AI citation probability.
The AI toolkit in SemRush also shows which competitor domains appear in AI answers for your tracked queries, which is the beginning of AI citation gap analysis at the domain level.
Ahrefs Content Gap
Ahrefs Content Gap is reliable for classical keyword gap identification. Enter your domain and competitor domains, and it returns the keyword list. For AI SEO content gap purposes, filter the results for:
- Question-intent queries (what, how, why, best, should, when)
- Queries with high monthly search volume in your category
- Informational intent queries where AI Overviews are most likely to be present
The Ahrefs Content Gap does not natively show AI Overview presence, so cross-reference the results with SemRush or Google Search Console AI data.
Authoritas Topic Gap
Authoritas is the most purpose-built tool for AI citation gap analysis. Rather than comparing keyword rankings, it compares citation presence across AI engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews.
Run a competitor analysis in Authoritas and it surfaces the topics where competitors are appearing in AI-generated answers and your domain is not. This is the true AI citation gap — the queries where being absent from AI answers costs you visibility regardless of where you rank in blue links.
For teams serious about AI SEO, Authoritas’s gap data is more actionable than keyword gap data because it directly shows where the AI citation opportunity is, not just where the ranking opportunity is.
MarketMuse Competitive Content Analysis
MarketMuse analyzes topical authority — not just keyword coverage — and identifies where your content cluster is incomplete relative to competitors. The gap analysis it produces reflects:
- Topics your site covers partially but with lower depth scores than competing sites
- Topics in your market that competitors have built authority on and you have not started
- Subtopics missing from existing pages that reduce their topical completeness scores
MarketMuse’s content intelligence is particularly useful for identifying structural gaps — where a page exists but is incomplete — rather than just missing content. For AI citation, topical completeness is a primary signal. A page that covers 60% of a topic’s relevant subtopics is less AI-citable than a page covering 90%.
Frase Topic Research
Frase approaches content gap analysis from the question layer. Enter a target topic and Frase shows you the questions appearing in top-ranked content for that topic. Cross-reference against your existing content to identify which questions you are not answering.
For AI content gap purposes, focus Frase’s question analysis on the “People Also Ask” clusters and long-tail question formats. These are the query patterns AI engines sample when generating answers, and missing questions in your content are direct citation gaps.
SE Ranking Keyword Gap
SE Ranking’s Keyword Gap tool is a mid-market alternative to SemRush and Ahrefs. For content gap analysis, it covers classical keyword comparison well at a lower cost. SE Ranking also includes AI Overview presence data in its keyword reports, which allows the same overlay analysis — classical gap + AI trigger identification — that SemRush enables.
How to run a complete content gap analysis for AI SEO
Step 1: Classical gap identification. Run SemRush or Ahrefs Keyword Gap against your top two to three competitors. Filter for question-intent and informational queries. Export the list.
Step 2: AI presence overlay. For each gap query, check whether AI Overviews are present (SemRush AI toolkit or manual verification). Prioritize gaps where AI Overviews already exist — these queries are already being answered by AI, and appearing in those answers is the most direct citation opportunity.
Step 3: AI citation gap. Use Authoritas or manually test in ChatGPT and Perplexity: which competitor pages are being cited for your highest-priority gap queries? Note what content format, depth, and structure those pages use.
Step 4: Topical completeness gap. Use MarketMuse or Frase to identify what subtopics and questions your existing pages are missing relative to highly-cited pages. These internal gaps are often fixable with targeted updates rather than new content.
Step 5: Brief and prioritize. Build content briefs for the top 10 gaps by traffic potential multiplied by AI citation impact. Use Frase or Clearscope for brief generation. Prioritize topics with existing AI Overview or citation presence over purely classical ranking opportunities.
The gap analysis cadence
Content gap analysis is not a one-time audit. Run it:
- Quarterly for your full competitor set
- Monthly for your highest-priority topic clusters
- Whenever a competitor publishes a major content piece (monitor with SemRush alerts)
The competitive landscape in AI citations shifts as competitors update content and as AI engine behavior evolves. Regular gap analysis keeps your content strategy reactive to actual changes rather than static.
