GEO. Generative Engine Optimization explained.

GEO is the discipline of optimizing web content so that generative search experiences — Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Search Generative Experience — synthesize their answers from your content. AEO is about getting cited. GEO is about being the source the generative answer is built from.

Definition: what GEO actually means

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing web content so that generative AI search experiences — Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Search Generative Experience, Bing Copilot — pull from your content when they synthesize answers for users. Where AEO is about earning an explicit citation from a retrieval-style engine, GEO is about being the substrate the generative engine builds its answer from, even when attribution is less prominent.

GEO is downstream of classical SEO. Generative engines like AI Overviews predominantly draw from pages that already rank organically. GEO is what you add on top: AI-friendly structure, schema, direct-answer formatting, and topical authority depth.

Working definition. If SEO is “rank in Google” and AEO is “be the source ChatGPT cites,” GEO is “be the source Google AI Overviews synthesizes from.”

GEO vs SEO vs AEO at a glance

The three modern disciplines are complementary, not interchangeable.

SEO
Rank in Google’s organic blue-link results. The prerequisite for everything else.
AEO
Be cited inside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity answers. Explicit attribution, retrieval-style.
GEO
Be synthesized into Google AI Overviews, Gemini, SGE. Less explicit attribution but largest reach.

How generative engines pick their source content

The selection mechanic inside Google AI Overviews looks roughly like this:

  1. Determine eligibility. Run a classical Google ranking pass. Pages outside the top 10-20 organic results rarely make it into AI Overview consideration.
  2. Score for synthesis. Score candidate passages on direct-answer fit, structured data, semantic completeness, and source authority.
  3. Apply E-E-A-T weighting. Boost pages with strong author / publisher signals; down-weight pages without them. For YMYL queries (medical, financial, legal) the boost is decisive.
  4. Synthesize and attribute. Generate the AI Overview answer and emit source links (typically 3-8) for the user to click through.

Every step is a GEO surface. Step 1 cares about classical SEO. Step 2 cares about how you wrote your H2 paragraphs and whether you have FAQPage/HowTo schema. Step 3 cares about your Person and Organization schema. Step 4 cares about whether your sentence is concise and quotable.

The 2026 GEO playbook

Five practices doing the most work right now:

  1. Rank organically first. GEO without underlying classical SEO is wishful thinking. Generative engines almost exclusively pull from organic top-of-page material.
  2. Direct-answer formatting under every H2. The first 1-3 sentences after an H2 should be a self-contained, quotable answer to the question implied by the heading.
  3. Deep schema markup. FAQPage, HowTo, Article (with linked Person + Organization), Speakable on TL;DR blocks. See our schema markup chapter.
  4. Topic clusters, not isolated posts. Generative engines weight topical authority through linked content clusters. Single posts in a vacuum lose to interlinked sets covering the same entity from multiple angles. See content strategy.
  5. Real human authors with credentials. Person schema with sameAs to authoritative profiles, visible byline, credential statement. AI Overviews preferentially pull from named, credentialed authors. See E-E-A-T.

Frequently asked questions

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing web content so that generative AI search experiences like Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Search Generative Experience synthesize their answers from your content. Unlike SEO, which optimizes for ranking, GEO optimizes for being the source the generative engine pulls from, often with less explicit attribution than retrieval-style engines provide.

What's the difference between GEO and AEO?

AEO focuses on retrieval-style answer engines like ChatGPT Search, Claude, and Perplexity, which surface explicit citations. GEO focuses on generative search experiences like Google AI Overviews and Gemini that synthesize answers, often with less prominent attribution. AEO and GEO overlap heavily in tactics (schema, direct-answer formatting, E-E-A-T) but optimize for different surfaces.

Is GEO the same as SEO?

No, but they are tightly linked. GEO depends on classical SEO ranking as a prerequisite — AI Overviews pull from pages that already rank well organically. GEO adds AI-friendly structure (concise answers, clear hierarchy, schema) and topical authority depth on top of strong SEO foundations.

How do I optimize for Google AI Overviews?

Five high-leverage moves: (1) put a 1-3 sentence direct answer immediately under the H1 or relevant H2; (2) use clear, scannable structure (definitions, lists, tables); (3) implement FAQPage and HowTo schema; (4) build topical authority through clusters rather than isolated posts; (5) cite primary sources, which AI Overviews preferentially extract from. See our chapter on AEO, GEO, and AI Overviews for the full playbook.

Which generative engines should I optimize for?

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode (largest reach and clearest ranking link), Gemini (Google’s consumer assistant), and to a lesser extent Microsoft Copilot in Bing. Most GEO work for the Google surfaces transfers to Microsoft because both retrieve from comparable indexes and apply similar synthesis logic.

How do I measure GEO performance?

Track AI Overview appearance frequency for your target queries (Search Console offers limited visibility; third-party tools like Profound, Otterly, and SE Ranking provide better data), zero-click impression value, brand mention rate inside generative answers, and downstream branded search lift. Position tracking in classical results is a useful leading indicator.
