How Do I Know My SEO Is Working?
Most people check the one metric that moves last and conclude SEO is failing. The early signals tell you months sooner. Here is what to watch, and when.
You know your SEO is working when the leading indicators move, not when traffic does. Pages get indexed, then impressions climb, then average position improves, then clicks and conversions follow. Watch them in that order. If you only watch traffic, you are checking the metric that moves last and panicking months early.
Here is the full picture, and how to read it honestly.
What does “SEO is working” actually mean?
It means search systems can find your pages, are choosing to show them for more queries, are ranking them higher over time, and are sending you qualified visitors who do something valuable. Those four things happen in sequence, not at once.
The mistake is treating them as one number. Traffic is the last domino. If you judge a two-month-old effort by traffic, you will always conclude it failed, because the dominoes ahead of traffic have not finished falling.
Which metrics prove it, and in what order?
Check them from earliest signal to latest.
Indexing. Are your pages actually in the index? In Google Search Console, the Pages report shows indexed versus not indexed. If a page is not indexed, nothing downstream can happen. This is the first thing to confirm, and the first thing to fix.
Impressions. In the Search Console Performance report, rising impressions mean you are appearing for more queries. This is the earliest sign the content is gaining relevance, often visible within weeks, long before clicks move.
Average position. Improving average position on your target queries shows you are climbing. A move from position 40 to position 15 earns no clicks yet, but it is unambiguous progress toward page one.
Clicks and organic traffic. Once positions cross into the visible range, clicks follow. This is where most people start looking, and it is the slowest to move.
Conversions. Traffic that signs up, buys, or calls. This is the point of all of it, and it lags everything else.
The measuring SEO chapter covers how to set this up as a repeatable dashboard.
How the AI-search era changes the answer
Add one more signal that classic dashboards miss: citations inside AI answers.
Much of your visibility now happens in AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, where a large share of value never becomes a click. Your brand can appear in an answer thousands of people read while your click count barely moves. If you judge only by traffic, you will undercount SEO that is genuinely working.
Track AI citation presence across engines alongside your classic metrics. The AEO KPI framework and how to measure AI visibility cover that side.
How long before I should expect results?
Expect indexing within days to a few weeks, impressions within one to three months, ranking gains within three to six months, and clicks and conversions after that. New sites and competitive markets run slower.
If indexing and impressions are climbing but clicks are flat, SEO is working and you are early. If impressions are flat after several months on indexed pages, that is the real warning sign, and it usually points to a relevance or intent mismatch rather than a broken strategy. Google’s own SEO starter guide is a good baseline to check your fundamentals against.
The short rule: watch the front of the funnel to know if it is working, and watch the back of the funnel to know what it is worth.
FAQs
What is the first sign that SEO is working?
Indexing, then rising impressions. Before you ever see more traffic, Google Search Console will show your pages getting indexed and then appearing for more queries (impressions). These leading signals move within weeks, months before clicks, so they are the earliest proof that your SEO is on the right track.
Why is my SEO traffic not growing even though I am doing everything right?
Traffic is the last metric to move. It follows indexing, impressions, and ranking gains, which can take three to six months to translate into clicks. If your impressions and average position are improving but clicks are flat, the work is succeeding and you are simply early in the sequence.
What metrics show SEO is working?
Indexed page count and impressions first, then average position, then organic clicks and conversions, in that order. In the AI-search era, add citation presence inside AI answers, since much of that value never becomes a click and is invisible to a traffic-only dashboard.
