Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)

The practice of increasing the share of visitors who complete a desired action. CRO turns existing traffic into more leads and sales without needing more visitors.

Conversion rate optimization is the systematic process of improving the percentage of visitors who take a desired action, whether that is a purchase, a form submission, a call, or a signup. The conversion rate is conversions divided by visitors.

Why it matters

Traffic is expensive to grow; converting more of the traffic you already have is often the higher-return lever. Lifting a conversion rate from 2 percent to 3 percent is a 50 percent increase in results from the same audience. For SEO specifically, CRO is what turns hard-won rankings and citations into revenue.

The core levers

How it is done

CRO is evidence-driven, not guesswork. It starts with data (analytics, heatmaps, session recordings, user feedback) to find where visitors drop off, forms a hypothesis, then tests a change, often through A/B testing, and keeps what measurably wins.

The intent connection

A high conversion rate depends on matching the page to search intent. Traffic arriving on a page that answers a different question than the visitor asked will not convert no matter how polished the design. Get the intent match right first, then optimize the path to action.
