The Map Pack is the local block Google shows for location-based queries: a map with three nearby businesses listed beneath it. It is also called the Local 3-Pack, after the number of results it traditionally displays.
What it is
For a query with local intent, such as a search for a service near a place, Google surfaces the Map Pack high on the results page. Each entry shows a business name, rating, and core details drawn largely from its Business Profile. For years this block was the dominant way people discovered nearby businesses, more visible and more clicked than the organic listings below it.
Why it matters
In 2026 the Map Pack is increasingly compressed into AI surfaces. AI Mode and Gemini answer local questions with one to three recommendations rather than a ranked block the user scans, and those picks draw on the same underlying local data. The discovery moment is shifting from a list a person browses to a recommendation an assistant makes, which raises the cost of having incomplete or inconsistent business information.
How to apply it
Keep your Business Profile complete and accurate: categories, hours, location, and attributes. Earn genuine reviews, and make sure your details match across the web so both the Map Pack and AI recommendations can trust and surface them.
