AI Clicks in Search Console: the Metric to Watch Now
For the first time you can see how your AI-feature visibility actually performs. The data is partial and easy to misread, so here is how to use it without fooling yourself.
For two years the honest answer to “how is my AI visibility doing” was a shrug and some manual prompt testing. Google just made it a little less of a shrug.
In July 2026 it expanded the AI performance reports in Search Console and published a deeper help doc on AI controls. You can now see clicks and impressions attributed to AI features, not just classic search. That is genuinely new, and worth using. It is also easy to misread, so read it carefully.
Here is what the data is, what it is not, and how to act on it.
What AI clicks actually count
An AI impression is your page appearing as a cited or linked source inside a Google AI experience, an AI Overview or AI Mode answer. An AI click is a user actually clicking through from that surface to your page.
That distinction is the whole story of AI search in one metric. In classic search, an impression meant you were on the page and a click meant you won the visit. In AI features, most of the value never becomes a click. Your brand appears inside an answer thousands of people read, and only a fraction click, because the answer already told them what they needed.
So do not judge AI performance the way you judge classic search. A low click-through rate on AI impressions is not failure. It is the format. The impression is the brand exposure. The click is a bonus on top of it.
How to read it without fooling yourself
Watch impressions as your visibility signal. Rising AI impressions mean Google is citing you more often inside answers, which is the thing you are actually optimizing for. That trend matters more than the click number next to it.
Treat clicks as a secondary, softer signal. They tell you when your title and the way you get cited are compelling enough to pull someone out of the answer, which is useful, but a small number is normal and not a problem to fix.
Segment AI features from classic search when you report. Blending them hides what is happening. A page can lose classic clicks while gaining AI impressions, which is a page growing in influence while a naive dashboard shows it shrinking.
And remember the ceiling on this data. It is Google only. It says nothing about ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude, which cite a mostly different set of pages. Search Console is now one real input, not the whole picture. Pair it with cross-engine tracking, covered in how to measure AI visibility and the AEO KPI framework.
What to do with it this week
Open the AI performance report and note which pages are earning AI impressions. Those are the pages Google already trusts inside answers. They are your best candidates to reinforce, with fresher data, cleaner structure, and tighter answers, because you are building on proven ground rather than guessing.
Then look for the gap: pages with strong classic performance but low AI impressions. Those rank but are not getting cited, which usually means the answer is not extractable enough. That is a structure problem, and the fix is the retrieval and chunking work that gets a clean answer pulled into the summary.
The metric finally exists. Use it as a compass for where you already have traction, not as a scoreboard you are supposed to feel bad about.
FAQs
What are AI clicks in Google Search Console?
AI clicks are clicks that come to your site from Google’s AI experiences, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, rather than from classic search results. Google expanded these AI performance reports in July 2026, so you can now see impressions and clicks attributed to AI features separately.
Why is my click-through rate low on AI impressions?
Because most AI value does not become a click. When your page is cited inside an AI answer, the answer often satisfies the user without a click, so a low click-through rate is the normal shape of the format, not a failure. Treat rising AI impressions as the visibility win and clicks as a secondary signal.
Does Search Console show my visibility in ChatGPT or Perplexity?
No. The AI performance reports cover Google’s AI features only. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other engines cite a largely different set of pages, so Search Console is one input, not the full picture. Pair it with cross-engine citation tracking.
