Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of preparing content so AI answer engines can lift it directly into the responses they generate. Where classical SEO aims for a high ranking position, AEO aims for the citation an engine emits when it answers a user’s question in natural language.
What it is
An answer engine reads a query, retrieves candidate sources, and writes a synthesized response. AEO is the work of making your page one of those trusted sources. That means writing clear, self-contained statements an engine can quote without surrounding context, structuring pages so a single passage fully answers a single question, and backing claims with signals the engine treats as credible.
How it differs from classical SEO
Classical SEO optimizes for ranking, AEO optimizes for extraction and attribution, and GEO optimizes for being the substrate a generative engine builds from. The three overlap but reward different things. A page can rank well yet never get cited because its key facts are buried in long narrative paragraphs that resist clean extraction.
How to apply it
Lead sections with direct answers, use descriptive headings phrased as the questions people actually ask, and add structured data so the engine parses your content without ambiguity. Keep definitions tight and factual. For deeper coverage, see our AEO guide.
