An AI citation is the attribution an answer engine gives when it draws on your content to build a response. Engines like ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Claude name or link the sources behind their answers, and that named reference is the new measure of visibility in AI search.
What it is
When an engine answers a question, it pulls facts from a handful of retrieved pages and, in most modern interfaces, shows where those facts came from. A citation can be an inline link, a numbered footnote, or a source card. For publishers it functions the way a ranking once did: proof that the engine considered your page authoritative enough to stand behind.
Why it matters
Citations replace clicks as the thing worth optimizing for. In a zero-click answer the user may never visit your site, but a citation still puts your brand in front of them and carries trust because the engine vouched for it. Tracking which queries cite you, and which competitors get cited instead, becomes the core reporting question of AEO.
How to earn them
Engines cite sources that are easy to verify and hard to dispute: clear factual statements, recent data with dates, and pages with strong authority signals. Concrete, well-attributed writing gets cited more often than vague summaries. For deeper coverage, see AI citation building.
