Google AI Overview Tracking Tools Compared: Which Ones Show If You Are Cited

Most rank trackers can tell you an AI Overview appeared. Far fewer can tell you whether you were in it. That gap is the whole buying decision.

Google AI Overview tracking tools compared: tools that show whether your page is cited in AI Overviews

The best Google AI Overview tracking tools in 2026 are Nightwatch for small teams that want AI Overviews and AI Mode included in a normal rank tracker, Semrush or SE Ranking if you already use either, Advanced Web Ranking for the most precise citation-position data, SE Visible or Otterly.ai for prompt-based tracking across AI Overviews and other engines, and seoClarity or BrightEdge for enterprise. Google Search Console and Ahrefs’ AI Overviews Tracker cover the basics for free.

Most of these tools can tell you an AI Overview appeared for a keyword. Fewer can tell you whether your page was cited inside it, at which position, and which competitor took the spot you wanted. That is the difference worth paying for.

Why AI Overview tracking matters now

When an AI Overview appears, fewer people click the blue links below it. One Neil Patel dataset found users clicked a traditional organic result 8% of the time when an AI Overview was present, against 15% when it was not. Search Engine Land reported in early 2026 that 68% of US Google searches now end without a click.

How often AI Overviews appear depends on who is counting. Studies in 2026 range from about 13% to about 48% of queries, and coverage runs far higher on health, education and how-to questions. If you publish informational content, assume a large share of your keywords are affected.

So the question changed. It used to be “where do I rank?” Now it is “when the AI Overview shows, am I in it?”

Two kinds of AI Overview tracker

Two ways to track AI Overviews: keyword-based rank trackers versus prompt-based AI visibility tools

Keyword-based rank trackers (Nightwatch, Semrush, SE Ranking, AccuRanker, Advanced Web Ranking, seoClarity, BrightEdge, STAT) check the short keywords you already track and record the AI Overview as one feature of the results page, alongside your organic position. Best for SEO teams who want AI Overview data next to their existing rankings.

Prompt-based AI visibility tools (SE Visible, Otterly.ai, Ahrefs Brand Radar) check longer, conversational questions and track AI Overviews together with AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Best for brand and content teams who care about being recommended, not about position 4 vs position 6.

Many teams end up with one of each. If you only buy one, buy the kind that matches how you already report.

What to look for

Citation detection, not just presence. The tool must record whether your domain is cited inside the AI Overview, not only that one appeared.

Citation position. AI Overviews list several sources. Being first matters more than being seventh.

Competitor citations. Which URLs Google cited instead of you. This is your to-do list.

The answer text or a snapshot. AI Overviews change daily. A stored copy lets you see what changed when your citation disappeared.

AI Mode coverage. Google’s AI Mode uses many of the same sources, and tracking both in one place saves a second tool.

Google Search Console: the free baseline

Search Console’s generative AI report finished rolling out globally on August 31, 2026. It shows impressions across AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover, broken down by page, country, device and date, with data starting May 18, 2026.

It does not show clicks, and it does not show which queries triggered the AI Overview. Use it to see which pages earn AI impressions at all, then use a tracker to find out why. Our guide to Google Search Console for AI visibility walks through the report.

Ahrefs AI Overviews Tracker: free spot checks

Ahrefs offers a free AI Overviews Tracker for checking how your brand shows up in AI Overviews. It is useful for a quick look. For ongoing tracking across AI surfaces, Ahrefs’ paid Brand Radar shows citations separately from mentions and lists the exact source URLs Google pulled in, including competitors and Reddit threads.

Nightwatch: best value for small teams

Nightwatch includes AI Overview and AI Mode tracking on every plan, alongside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, with no per-seat fees. Starter is €79 a month for 500 keywords and 50 AI prompts, and Professional is €159 for 2,500 keywords. It also stores raw SERP snapshots, which gives you an evidence trail when a citation disappears.

The catch: keyword and prompt caps are modest at the entry level.

SE Ranking: best if you already use SE Ranking

SE Ranking tracks AI Overview appearances in its rank tracker and sells AI search tracking as an add-on. The AI Search add-on starts at $89 a month ($71.20 billed annually) for 200 prompts across AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT, with a dashboard for mentions, citations and sentiment.

The catch: the add-on cost sits on top of an SE Ranking SEO plan. If AI tracking is all you need, SE Visible is the standalone version.

Semrush Position Tracking: best if you already use Semrush

Semrush shows the share of your tracked keywords that trigger an AI Overview, lets you filter keywords where your domain is featured in it, and charts your citation trend over time, updated daily. AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini sit in the same toolset.

The catch: AI Overview data is a panel inside rank tracking, not a full archive of what each AI Overview said.

AccuRanker: best for historical AI Overview charts

AccuRanker’s AI Overview page counts the keywords where you are inside the AI Overview (“AI Overview owned”), shows the AI Overview text per keyword, and charts how that changes over time across desktop, mobile and many locations.

The catch: AI tracking is a separate paid module on top of the base plan, and AI Mode coverage is not clearly documented.

Advanced Web Ranking: best for precise citation position

Advanced Web Ranking turns on AI Overview tracking by default for Google projects and reports an “AIO citation rank,” the position of your citation inside the AI Overview. It also offers a dedicated Google Search + AIO engine type designed to reduce missed AI Overviews, plus AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude tracking across 170+ countries.

The catch: pricing is less transparent than rivals, so get a quote for your keyword count.

SE Visible: best prompt-based tracker for Google AI surfaces

SE Visible tracks AI Overviews and AI Mode together with ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity on every plan, with unlimited seats. It collects answers through a real browser session rather than an API and lists every domain and URL cited for your prompts, refreshed daily. Basic is $99 a month for 200 prompts.

The catch: it tracks prompts, not your existing keyword list, so it complements a rank tracker rather than replacing one.

Otterly.ai: cheapest prompt-based option

Otterly.ai tracks Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot daily from $29 a month, and its AI Search Analytics view lists the specific domains and URLs cited for each prompt. Seats are unlimited.

The catch: 15 prompts on the entry plan, and Google AI Mode is a paid add-on.

seoClarity: best for linking AI Overviews to traffic

seoClarity’s ArcAI tracks AI Overviews across very large keyword sets and reports whether each URL is cited, mentioned or missing, alongside the click-through and traffic impact. It covers AI Mode and other engines too. Enterprise pricing only.

BrightEdge: longest AI Overview history

BrightEdge has tracked Google’s AI answers daily since November 2023, before most rivals, and reports research-grade metrics such as how much of the page an AI Overview takes up and how often its citations overlap with the organic top 10. Enterprise pricing only.

STAT (Moz): best for SERP feature analysis at scale

STAT tracks AI Overviews as one of 60+ SERP features and lets you slice the data across many dimensions, plus newer generative-engine brand tracking. Enterprise, quote-based pricing.

How to set up AI Overview tracking

  1. Start in Search Console. Find the pages already earning AI impressions. These are your baseline.
  2. Tag informational keywords. AI Overviews concentrate on how-to, what-is and comparison queries. Track those first.
  3. Track citations, not presence. Report the share of AI Overviews that cite you, not the share of keywords with an AI Overview.
  4. Review lost citations weekly. When a citation disappears, compare the stored AI Overview text and see which URL replaced you.
  5. Add AI Mode. It draws on overlapping sources and is growing. Track both from the start.

What to do with the data

The competitor URLs Google cites are the most useful output. Read them. They usually answer the question more directly, higher on the page, with clearer structure than the page that lost the citation. Our guides to how to optimize for Google AI Overviews and AI Overviews SEO strategy cover the fixes.

If you also need Google AI Mode in depth, see our comparison of AI Mode tracking tools. For tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude as well, see the 13 best AI visibility tools and our ChatGPT rank tracker guide.

The bottom line

Start free with Search Console and Ahrefs’ tracker to see whether AI Overviews touch your traffic at all. If they do, add AI Overview citation tracking to the rank tracker you already use, or pick Nightwatch if you are choosing fresh. If you care more about being recommended across Google and ChatGPT than about keyword positions, go prompt-based with SE Visible or Otterly.ai.

Either way, measure whether you are cited. Knowing an AI Overview appeared is not enough.
